Employment Enterprises, Inc. is working with a locally based and locally owned electric distribution system that provides electric services throughout Northern Virginia. We are searching for a Protection & Controls Engineer based in Gainesville, Virginia. This is a hybrid schedule, market rate position, meaning we do not have a set salary and the client is open to a wide range commensurate with experience. Relocation assistance is available for qualifying candidates.
Protection & Controls Engineer Responsibilities:
- Design and engineer substation systems and relay settings used in the control and operation of utility transmission and distribution facilities.
- Analyze the performance of protective relay operations to ensure reliability and proper coordination within the electric system.
- Create and review equipment specifications and standards for substation protection, automation, and communications equipment.
- Develop, coordinate, and maintain relay settings databases, test standards, and maintenance procedures.
- Investigate system disturbances and relay operations to identify root causes and recommend improvements.
- Support system operations during outages and emergencies through analysis of fault data and relay sequences.
- Develop detailed control schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection logic drawings.
- Oversee installation, verification, and upgrading of substation protection, communication, and control equipment.
- Review construction drawings for compliance with standards and specifications.
- Coordinate design, construction, and testing activities for substation additions and modifications.
- Ensure compliance with industry safety codes, RUS specifications, and company policies.
- Support continuous professional development in substation and telecommunications technologies.
Protection & Controls Engineer Qualifications:
- Minimum of 3 years of protection and controls engineering experience.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field; Master’s preferred.
- NCEES EIT certification or PE license is preferred.
- Experience with electric utility systems and substation projects is advantageous.
- Knowledge of system protection in transient analysis, load flow, grounding analysis, and related studies.
- Proficiency in serial and Ethernet communications for protective relays.
- Ability to perform forensic analysis of protection system malfunctions.
- Strong mathematical skills, including calculus and vector algebra.
- Effective communication skills across organizational levels.
- Proficiency in CAD software for substation drawings.
- Demonstrated project management capabilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
