Our client is a trusted utility and energy provider delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable solutions to homes and businesses. The Safety Instructor will support safety training delivery, field safety execution, and foundational safety program support within our utility and critical infrastructure environment.
This is an onsite position based in Springfield, VA, paying between $50.00 to $60.00 per hour. This is a full-time, contract position.
Responsibilities
- Deliver instructor-led safety training for employees and contractors, including onboarding, refresher, and task-specific safety training.
- Facilitate training aligned with established safety programs, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Support development, revision, and improvement of training materials, presentations, and field job aids.
- Serve as a credible field-level safety representative who can effectively engage crews, supervisors, and contractors.
- Provide field support to reinforce safety expectations and validate understanding of procedures and job safety planning.
- Participate in jobsite observations, safety walk-downs, and selected field engagements to identify hazards and verify controls.
- Assist supervisors and crews with Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), permits, and pre-job planning.
- Provide constructive, non-punitive coaching to reinforce safe behaviors and compliance.
- Support implementation of existing safety programs, procedures, and standards.
- Identify common field issues, training gaps, or procedural challenges and communicate them back to the Safety Team.
- Assist with rollout of new or updated safety procedures and training content.
- Support contractor safety engagement and alignment with company expectations.
- Support incident investigations as requested, including fact-finding, documentation, and follow-up.
- Assist with identifying contributing factors and recommended corrective actions.
- Support communication of lessons learned through training or safety briefings.
- Support compliance with OSHA, DOT, PHMSA, and applicable utility safety requirements.
- Assist with documentation, audits, and verification of training and compliance requirements.
- Reinforce company safety policies and contractor safety expectations in the field.
Qualifications
- Solid knowledge of occupational safety fundamentals, hazard recognition, and job safety planning.
- Demonstrated experience delivering safety training or instructing adults in operational environments.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to engage field personnel effectively.
- Practical, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to translate safety requirements into workable field practices.
- Comfortable working in operational and field settings.
Preferred Certifications (Not Required)
- CHST, ASP, CSP, CUSP, or similar safety credentials.
- FEMA ICS (100/200 preferred).
- Incident investigation or root-cause training.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health, Industrial Technology, or related field; or equivalent industry, military, or trade experience.
- 3–7 years of experience in safety roles within utilities, energy, construction, industrial, or high-risk environments.
- Experience delivering safety training and supporting field operations.
- Prior contractor safety or multi-crew environment experience preferred.
Software & Tools
- Experience using safety management systems or incident tracking tools.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, Word).
- Familiarity with digital training platforms or reporting dashboards is a plus but not required.
