Our client is a trusted utility and energy provider delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable solutions to homes and businesses. The Environmental Specialist will oversee regulatory compliance related to spill prevention and tank regulations within natural gas utility operations. This is a full-time, contract position based in Springfield, VA, paying $40.00-$55.00 per hour.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the subject-matter expert for 40 CFR Part 112 (SPCC), evaluating facility and equipment applicability and ensuring compliance.
- Develop, review, and certify SPCC Plans and maintain tank compliance programs.
- Conduct inspections and document conformance with regulatory standards.
- Identify compliance gaps, develop corrective actions, and track regulatory deadlines.
- Lead spill response activities, including reportability determinations and regulatory notifications.
- Support inspections and audits, prepare documentation, and provide regulatory interpretation.
- Coordinate stormwater compliance activities and work with capital projects to address tank requirements.
- Develop and deliver regulatory training to staff.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of environmental compliance experience, preferably supporting natural gas or energy utilities.
- Demonstrated ability to read, interpret, and apply environmental regulations, especially 40 CFR Part 112.
- Knowledge of SPCC applicability, inspection requirements, and compliance documentation.
- Strong technical writing and regulatory documentation skills.
- Experience supporting regulated facilities with EPA or state oversight.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience developing and maintaining SPCC Plans for natural gas facilities.
- Stormwater compliance experience related to oil management.
- Support during regulatory inspections or Notices of Violation.
- Professional certifications such as CHMM, CSP, PE, or similar.
Work Environment
This role involves a combination of office work and field inspections at active natural gas utility facilities. Occasional travel for inspections, audits, and compliance reviews is required. The work requires safety awareness in industrial environments, including compressor stations and service facilities.
