Our client is a major transportation agency responsible for connecting communities and supporting mobility across the DC region. The 1099 Accountant Specialist will manage the full 1099 lifecycle, including vendor setup, compliance, and banking coordination, to ensure accurate reporting and strong controls. This is a contract position, full time, onsite, based in Alexandria, VA, paying $42.09 per hour.
Responsibilities
- Manage the complete 1099 process from vendor onboarding through year-end reporting and filings.
- Determine and validate 1099 reportability by vendor type and payment category, ensuring correct setup and coding for reporting.
- Maintain and audit vendor tax profiles, including W-9 collection/validation, TIN accuracy, and withholding status.
- Reconcile vendor payments and 1099 totals, researching and resolving discrepancies before filing.
- Prepare, review, and coordinate year-end 1099 production, corrections, and reissues as needed.
- Support internal/external stakeholders during year-end close with documentation and status reporting.
- Set up and maintain vendors in the financial system, supporting compliant payment processing and reporting.
- Coordinate banking setup for vendor payments, including international banking instructions.
- Support e-file submission processes for 1099 filings using compatible platforms and tools.
Required qualifications
- Demonstrated experience managing 1099 processing from start to finish.
- Strong knowledge of 1099 rules, vendor compliance practices, and recordkeeping.
- Hands-on experience with year-end reporting and reconciliation.
- Experience with vendor setup and international banking setup.
- Ability to handle sensitive vendor and banking data securely.
- High attention to detail, strong documentation, and deadline management skills.
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with 1099 e-file processes and/or filing software/tools.
- Experience with international vendor banking setup and compliance.
- Public sector, large enterprise, or high-volume AP environment experience.
- Building checklists, controls, and process documentation for compliance.
